settling in, part 2
hello world.
so the whole crew just got back from a big weekend away at surfer's paradise! we'll be posting pictures soon, but the tally is now about a month since we got here and we have yet to properly hook up our internet. the latest hitch happened when the router we received had only a UK power plug on it... great. so we have a modem now, and it's connected to the internet, but nothing is connected to IT. give us a few more days, and we'll figure it out. THEN you'll be in trouble as we'll be constantly posting the most random pictures imaginable to our blog.
anyways, about the weekend...
the kiddies woke up fairly early in the morning to make sure we were at the train station by 9:33. with minimal planning, we managed to get the entire group of us on the same train whilst each of us began from a different location -- not bad for beginners!
the train ride is about an hour, followed by a twenty-minute bus ride. if you tried, you could be on the beach less than two hours after hopping on the train, i'd say.
upon arrival, we scored a little food at a fish and chips place right on the beachfront. we chatted with the waitresses there and found out that they were staying at the same hostel! the bad news was that our hostel was in the OPPOSITE direction from that which we'd been walking in. we headed back down a few streets and managed to find our new home: backpackers in paradise. now i wouldn't go as far as to say that this place was PARADISE -- the bathrooms were lacklustre to say the least, and the rooms were a bit stinky, but we managed to make do.
it wasn't long before we were off galavanting around the town looking for "rash guards". now for all of you readers out there who aren't elite surfers like us, these are basically spandex shirts that you wear so your nipples don't exfoliate themselves into chafed, swollen, tender masses as you paddle to the sea. they do a decent job, but they're more like rash... inhibitors.
shehz and i managed to find some matching black and white longsleeved quiksilver rash guards (you'll see photos soon) for $50. al, being the intrepid adventurer that he is, totally caved and bought the BLUE one. so now the three canadians have matching white, black, and blue rash guards. i have a feeling people can tell we're not the best surfers when we all hop into the water side-by-side wearing matching rash guards that are fluorescing with newness. "quiksilver RULES!"
a long day of attempted surfing was followed by an evening out. i won't go into much detail about the evening, as it is remarkably similar to many of the OTHER nights on the town. it was a club-crawl organized by our hostel. we visited two places called "melbas" and "shooters", and had a good dance at each. a highlight of the night was playing what i can only call "the animal game" with a bunch of scandinavians. they were MUCH better at it than we were, so within about 10 minutes we had all quit.
the next day consisted of more surfing, various flavours of italian "gelatissimo", mcdonalds, keep-away frisbee, and a sleepy train ride home.
it's my birthday on friday, so we'll probably be trying to figure out something for that. shehz's is coming up too, so make sure to give him a telepathic pat-on-the-back if you can -- he loves those. we're also trying to plan little side trips to sydney, cairns, and god knows where else. ayers rock is a good two days drive away, but what a fantastic road trip eh?
we'll be hooking you up with some eye candy soon, don't despair. i'm sure you've all spent enough time looking at me taking pictures of some guy's butt.
bye for now,
> ian
