land of the thais
hello world.
shehz and i have just gotten off of our plane and have successfully moved into our hostel near khao san road -- the main backpacker area of bangkok. it's sort of funny, because people here speak english FAR worse than malaysia and singapore combined, twice. when we walked into this internet cafe it took us about 15 minutes to figure out if we had to pay BEFORE or AFTER we used the internet. the lady who owned the place asked 2 people to translate, neither of which helped out very much.
i suppose i should provide some sort of summary as to what i ended up accomplishing in malaysia. the answer, really, is not much of anything -- but i still had a great time! after getting settled into my hostel and paying for two nights, i realized that i only had two more nights to stay before i was due back in singapore. i used this as an excuse to avoid going to puduraya, the scary area where you have to bargain for bus prices.
my stay in kuala lumpur initially consisted of me meeting a local guy named alang. through alang, i met a guy named craig (from new york) who was getting ice cream at alang's stand. we ended up having a few dinners together and chewing some serious fat. i then met natalie, anna, and lexi from the uk. very nice girls! they brought me out to meet a well-off fellow and his friend named shaun and andy respectively.
the story of our night out in KL is pretty lengthy, but i'll try to give you the coles notes. we started out at a place called the beach bar, which had some live music. we sat outdoors (under an awning, so we didn't get rained on), and ended up tearing through a fair bit of caesar salad, beer, and cocktails. we decided to continue the evening at a local place called the "loft bar" -- your malay equivalent to a north american club.
now unfortunately, captain superbouncer wasn't interested in letting me enter because i was wearing sandals. nevermind the fact that all three girls were, but i sure was. he just kept shaking his head. it turned into this big ordeal because shaun actually knew the owner, i believe, and was trying to complain about this etc etc. the solution? i rented shoes from a malay guy sitting outside the place. i paid him fourteen ringgit for his shoes, and he took my sandals. it actually would have been a great deal even if he had tried to "steal" my shoes because his were better anyway! they DID let me into the club at that point and the night started to heat up immensely.
multiple tequila + beer rounds later, ian is flaunting his dance moves on the raised, lit dancing platform. no worries though, i had company. in fac, our group of seven people were the only ones in the club besides the staff! as much as you may think that would make it a boring night, it was a bunch of fun.
the highlight of the evening came towards the end (as highlights on drinking nights tend to). i was convinced that it was my duty to get the entire bar staff, wait staff, and bouncer staff dancing with our group because they were all just standing there and i watching us anyway. i kept waving them all over, but i'd get a bunch of head-shakes. finally, one of the guys agreed to come over. i was drinking a corona at the time, and decided that he deserved some too. however, there was a catch:
"if i give you this, you have to really go for it!"
he nods.
i hand him the beer and he starts to drink. i commence clapping madly for him to chug the entire thing. about 5 seconds after he starts, in one swift motion he spits up a load of beer onto the chair and quickly wipes it off with his hand. at this point, i wasn't exactly sure what to do. i guess he wasn't used to drinking beer very quickly. i think he was unsure as to his course of action as well, because he proceeded to literally run away with my beer in his hand. i didn't see him for the rest of the night, but if he's reading this, i'm sorry buddy.
shehz and i are now in bangkok and are about to do some walking to grab some food.
we'll give you updates as they come -- shehz has a nice massage story to tell you all about.
latah.
